Regional Industry

This is one of the best agricultural regions in the province.  Our hog operations and cattle feed lots are highly competitive, we have value-added agricultural in organics and nutriceuticals and we have manufacturers who ship their products across North America and around the world.  Resource sector industries are also active in our region with Natural Gas, Oil and Forestry operations surrounding Barrhead and coal mining 45 km to the southwest (Wabamun area).

The Town of Barrhead serves as the regional trading and service centre for the County of Barrhead and surrounding area.  While agriculture is the mainstay of the regional economy the Town boasts over 500 businesses including agricultural services, retail outlets, business servicves and manufacturing.

The Town and County of Barrhead are servied by a well-maintained transportation network.
 
Highways
The Town of Barrhead is situated on a major provincial corridor at the junction of Highway 33 and Highway 18.  Highway 33, named the Grizzly Trail, is the shortest route to the Peace River Country.  Other connection highways include Secondary Highway 651, connecting Barrhead to Busby and Legal, Secondary Highway 654, connecting Barrhead to Manola, Secondary Highway 769, connecting Barrhead to Neerlandia and Highway 18 connecting Barrhead to Thunder Lake.

Bus Services
Greyhound Bus Lines provides regularly scheduled service to Barrhead.

Couriers and Taxis
Greyhound Express Courier, DHL Express, Priority Courier, FedEx and Purolator Courier service the region.

Ferry Service
The Klondike (Vega) Ferry Crossing is a cable ferry crossing the Athabasca River, open April to November.  An ice bridge is used after freeze-up during the winter months.

Air Service - The Barrhead Johnson Industrial Airport
The airport is vital to the region as it services government travel, municipal (medical evacuations, search and rescue and RCMP transfers), training (flight school), industry, agriculture and recreational purposes.  It accommodates an estimated 300 annual aircraft movements, anticipating more with Alberta's economic boom.  We welcome all newcomers!

Located within a few minutes of the Town of Barrhead (less than 3 miles) with its many services, and it's also adjacent to an 18 hole championship golf course.  The airport also offers on sight, a terminal with phone, water and sewer services, restroom, fridge and microwave, hangar facilities, parking, a keylock aviation fuel tank (100LL), and a newly resurfaced tarmac (2004)... bringing economic and recreational benefits to our community.

The airport, with 24-hour access, is designed for light commercial and recreational aircraft operation, with the asphalt runway being 3500 feet long and 100 feet wide.  The apron is asphalt, 300' long and 150' wide and the taxi way is turf, 1200' long and 50' wide, all with a load rating of 15,000 lbs.

Lighting includes:  ARCAL (Frequency 123.2) AS Runway Identification Lights, TE Threshold and Runway End Lights (medium intensity lighting) and one illuminated windsock.

Communications:  The Airport Frequency is 123.2.

Hangars:  There are 9 hangars developed with an additional 9 hangar plots available and room for future development as well.

Logistics:  Airport Name is Barrhead (Code C-EP3), Elevation is 2121, Latitude 54.06 N, Longitude 114.26 W, Magnetic Deviation 21.
