Blue Heron Support Services Association
Contact: 780-674-4944
Our Vision: All people are empowered to be fully included within society with the necessary support.
Our Mission: Blue Heron Support Services Association promotes empowerment and community inclusion through personalized service to people seeking support.
Blue Heron Support Services Association is a registered, non-profit, charitable organization that enhances the lives of people with disabilities, supporting them so they can live and work in the community. We also offer support for families who have children with disabilities.
Blue Heron provides a variety of services in the northwest Alberta region. Our programs focus on training and support to assist individuals to live in the community of their choice. Our base of operations is in Barrhead, but we also have a satellite office in Mayerthorpe and provide services to surrounding communities such as Alberta Beach, Onoway, Sangudo, Rochfort Bridge and Cherhill. We are primarily funded by the Person with the Development Disabilities North East Alberta Community Board. Other funding bodies include the Children Services Authority, Mental Health, Community Development and fundraising.
SERVICE AREAS:
Individual Service Planning (78 individuals): provides a summary of the persons strengths and needs in all areas of their life and provides a plan for the supports needed to meet the specific needs of that individual.
Independent Living Supports (17 individuals): provides support to those already living in the community who may need or want help with specific areas in day to day living.
Community Living Residential Support (20 individuals): provides support to people in their own homes in the community in ways which respect their rights and choices, enhances skill development, independence and personal growth, facilitates community integration, participation and acceptance.
Employment Services (34 individuals): provides work related training and on the job support to individuals wanting to pursue or maintain competitive employment within the community.
Community Supports (44 individuals): assists individuals in developing skills they require to access community resources for self-directed and valued activities. Support is provided in pursuing and accessing activities in education, skill development, volunteering and recreation/leisure.
Children Support Services (24 individuals): provides support for after school/summer programs, respite and transitional planning to children with identified support needs.
Employment Project: provides support to Associations and their support workers in establishing and maintaining employment opportunities for people with developmental disabilities, with businesses from the Northeast region of Persons with Development Disabilities Community Board.
Healthy Choices Project: provides instruction to people with developmental disabilities in subject areas ranging from personal hygiene to relationships to H.I.V. prevention.
Brain Injury Project (Start Date is April 1, 2002): research for people who have acquired brain injuries after the age of 18, what services they currently use, what services they need and recommend services to fill the void between the two.
STAFF EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES:
Blue Heron currently has over 225 positions within the association. The positions range from Taxi drivers to second hand clothing staff, administrative support staff to direct service workers and senior management staff to caretakers. The majority (85%) of positions are direct service workers. Positions range from 2 hours per week to full time. The opportunity for combining two or more part-time positions to make up full-time hours is taken advantage by many staff. As a result, Blue Heron employs approximately 150 people to fill the more than 225 positions.
Due to regular expansion in service needs, Blue Heron recruits potential staff interested in working with people on an on-going basis.
IMPACT ON THE COMMUNITY:
Individuals receiving support are encouraged to give back to the community as any other community members. Blue Heron supports their commitment to the community, in a variety of ways, from donation of volunteer time to payment of income taxes from jobs gained with support from Blue Heron.
Employees for Blue Heron are also encouraged to give back to the community. Many employees are also volunteers in the community. Employees volunteer with local community service clubs, youth groups, community committees and fundraising organizations.
Blue Heron as a whole also gives back to the community. Over $2 million a year goes to local employee wages, which is directly turned around into the community through living costs, local businesses and property taxes.
