HYDRANT FLUSHING

ANNUAL HYDRANT FLUSHING

thursday, july 30 to tuesday, august 25

Each year the Town inspects, exercises and flushes every fire hydrant across Barrhead. It's routine maintenance that clears sediment from our water mains and confirms hydrants are ready in an emergency. While it's underway in your area, you may notice temporary water discolouration or a slight drop in water pressure.

if your water looks discoloured

  1. Run your cold water tap for a few minutes until it runs clear. Avoid running hot water until it clears, so sediment isn't drawn into your water heater.
  2. Hold off on laundry while flushing is active in your area. Discoloured water can stain light-coloured fabrics. If clothes do get stained, don't put them in the dryer (heat will set the stains); rewash once the water is clear.
  3. Check that your water runs clear before using it for cooking or drinking. Though discoloured, water remains safe for consumption.

The discolouration is stirred-up mineral sediment and clears on its own. If your water hasn't cleared after running the cold tap for several minutes, please contact us. Water remains safe for consumption.
